Matthew McConaughey Hilariously Reveals Costar Anne Hathaway Came to His Birthday Party a Day Late
If Anne Hathaway was trying to lose a friend in 10 days, she might have accomplished that goal with anyone else. However, when How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days star Matthew McConaughey recently revealed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that his Serenity costar showed up to his birthday party a day late, he made it known that no feelings were hurt.
“My birthday’s on the fourth of November, so we had the party that night. And I didn’t notice, but the Hathaways didn’t show up,” the 49-year-old hunk dished to host Ellen DeGeneres on Monday, January 21 during the show’s “Burning Questions” segment.
“The next day, wake up, I was still in my robe around 5:00 p.m., the time that we had started the party the day before, and the doorbell rings. It’s Anne, and they’ve got a bottle of wine, they’ve got balloons, a gift, and I’m like, ‘Great! Come on in.'”
And he wasn’t kidding. According to Matthew, he didn’t send Anne, 36, and her husband, Adam Shulman, home. But after he opened the bottle of wine and poured everyone a glass, Matthew finally broke the news and said, “You do know, my birthday was yesterday.” The trio laughed at the mistake and ended up partying until 2:00 a.m. the next day. “My birthday party needed to be two days,” he joked.
Matthew and Anne became good friends while filming their new movie, Serenity, which is set to hit theaters on Friday, January 25. The movie also stars Diane Lane, who Matthew openly admitted to having a crush on when he was younger. “I told her [about my crush], first thing, too,” the actor told Entertainment Tonight about Diane, 53, in early January. “I said, ‘Do you know how long I’ve had a crush on you, Diane? Since [she starred in] Lonesome Dove.’ I told her straight up!”
So how did he compose himself while on set with one of his first crushes nearly 30 years later? “[She’s] fun and cool — and she’s a great actress. So, to be able to work with her was … it was a bit of a time travel, because when I had the crush on her, when it began with Lonesome Dove, I was really young and not even in this business. [Now] I’ve been doing it for 25 years. So, I time lept forward, and she doesn’t look much different.” Cute!
