The nationwide college admissions cheating scandal involving the likes of Felicity Huffman and Lori Laughlin — among dozens others — is sending shockwaves through Hollywood. While many are voicing their frustration about the situation, at least for Angela Bassett, there’s a silver lining.

“The consequences right now are so life-altering and steep but, prayerfully, some good news will come out of it at any rate,” the 9-1-1 star told Closer Weekly exclusively at a PaleyFest event for the FOX series in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 17. “It will be hard on some folks, absolutely, but [it’s a] cautionary moment.”

Angela, 60, gets “parents who are a little too much,” but admits that isn’t how she handles her own children. Together with her husband of more than 20 years, Courtney B. Vance, the Black Panther star is mom to 13-year-old twins Slater and Bronwyn. Angela believes you should “let your kids get into the college they’re smart enough to get into.”

“I don’t help my kids with their homework,” the Oscar-nominated actress revealed. “I’ve got homework myself. I’ve got to memorize these scripts for tomorrow. Listen, my mother didn’t help me with my homework. No, not once. That’s your job, and this is my job.”

The Department of Justice accuses the Desperate Housewives of making a charitable contribution of $15,000 to a scheme allowing her eldest daughter to cheat on a college entrance exam. They also accuse her of nearly doing the same exact thing for her youngest daughter. They accuse the Fuller House star of agreeing to bribes totaling $500,000 to get her two daughters into college as recruits for the crew team — despite them never having done crew.

“I was shocked to that degree,” Angela added, noting that she is “disappointed” in her contemporaries for the lengths they went to. “But it also doesn’t surprise me, the depth that man is capable of going to.”

Angela isn’t the only celebrity to speak out about the issue. Rob Lowe tweeted — then deleted — a slam of those involved in the crime while Kelly Ripa and Rita Wilson spoke out on national television about it, the former on Live! With Kelly and Ryan and the latter on Busy Tonight. All had pretty harsh things to say.

We hope Angela is right and some positive comes out of something so negative.
