The Today show changed forever on Wednesday, Nov. 29 after Matt Lauer was abruptly fired for sexual misconduct in the workplace. His co-anchor, Savannah Guthrie, emotionally broke the news to viewers alongside Hoda Kotb during the morning talk show.
And now that Matt has officially been terminated from Today, fans are curious who will replace the TV personality, who sat in that seat for the past 20 years. According to People, NBC has a temporary plan in place to fill Matt's seat every morning.
"There will be a rotation for now," a source explained to the news outlet. "But there’s a lot that has to get worked out." The insider added, "When Matt was on vacation or on assignment, there was a huge bench of people that filled in for him. Whether it’s Hoda or Carson [Daly] or Willie Geist or Craig Melvin, the weekend anchor."
And while all of Matt's co-stars are saddened by this unfortunate news, there's nobody more apologetic than Matt. "There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions. To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry," his statement read. "As I am writing this I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC. Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed.”
He continued, “I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly. Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I'm committed to beginning that effort. It is now my full-time job. The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws. It's been humbling. I am blessed to be surrounded by the people I love. I thank them for their patience and grace." Who do you think will replace Matt?
