They’re best buds! Sylvester Stallone took to Instagram this morning to share a kind birthday message to his good friend Arnold Schwarzenegger. The action hero, professional body builder, and former governor of California turns 70 years old today.
“Pre – HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARNOLD!!!!” Sylvestor captioned the side-by-side photo. “As long as you live and beyond, you’re always going to be the ‘BIG MAN’ who set the bar so high that it will never be surpassed, an action hero legend! (sic)”
The action stars met in 1977 at the Golden Globes when they were assigned to sit at the same table. That night, Stallone took home an award for Rocky and Schwarzenegger for Pumping Iron, and a friendship (and healthy rivalry!) was formed.
“I said, ‘Who is this guy? He’s like, as big as the whole table,'” Stallone recalled of the night he met The Terminator star during a panel discussion at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. “He kind of rained on my parade. Rocky was [up for] best newcomer and best picture, and he keeps staring at me, getting bigger and bigger.”
“Your mother came over to me to take a picture with me,” Schwarzenegger said. “She said, ‘You look like a piano mover.'”

Though they started off feuding, thanks to their movies often going head to head in the box office, the actors have done several projects together over the years, including all three The Expendables films and Escape Plan.
Back in 2007, Arnold told GQ that he feels both grateful and accomplished for the many things he’s done in both his personal life and career. But fame? It’s not important to him.
“I wanted to be the best at whatever I did. I had a lot of motivation and energy, and had a very clear vision of what my goals were and how I was going to achieve them,” he said. “And I went after my dream. I’ve always thought if you achieve your goals and become the best then you will achieve notoriety and fame anyway.”
