Talk about a creepy welcome! In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph’s Stella magazine, Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Pfeiffer shares that she was once apart of a cult when she first moved to LA.

The “Dangerous Liaisons” star says that she became involved with a couple who followed breatharianism, a belief in the ability to live without food or water and where sunlight serves as one’s nourishment.

“They were very controlling. I wasn’t living with them but I was there a lot and they were always telling me I needed to come more,” Michelle says. “I had to pay for all the time I was there, so it was financially very draining.”

The actress, who moved to LA in the late ‘70s at the age of 20, tells the mag that it wasn’t until she met her first husband Peter Horton that she realized what she had gotten into. Peter, a fellow actor, was working on a movie about followers of Reverend Moon Sun-myung’s Unification Church at the time and Michelle was helping him research the cult.

“We were talking with an ex-Moonie and he was describing the psychological manipulation and I just clicked,” she says. “I was in one.”

Though Michelle sticks to a strict vegan diet, the diet that the couple forced her to follow years ago was one that “nobody can adhere to.”

We’re happy to hear that you got out and got healthy when you did Michelle!
