Princess Diana Would’ve Been so Proud of Prince Harry for Finding Meghan Markle

She’s a commoner.

Though Diana was hardly the everyday woman we occasionally talk about her as — she was, in fact, a part of the aristocracy, if not a member of a noble family — she did usually live like one. Before her engagement to the prince of Wales, she was living in London with roommates and working as an assistant kindergarten teacher. She was actually the first royal bride to have a paying job before her wedding. Not only that, she also frequently bucked royal tradition when it came to the children, traveling with them when other royals might have left them at home.

Meghan is even further removed from being raised the royal way, and though she seems to be playing by the royal rules, she’s also demonstrated that she’s a strong, smart woman who finds her own way. We’d bet that Diana would love to see Harry with a woman who doesn’t just walk the line as she’s told, but has a voice and knows how to speak up for herself.

Meghan is close with her mom.

Diana always seemed to have a particularly special relationship with her sons, and it seems that Meghan and her mom Doria also have an extremely close relationship. The two visit each other often, and have been caught doing yoga together. It seems that her mom is one of the most important people in Meghan’s life — something we’re sure Diana would love.

She’s involved in a lot of charity work.

Diana had a couple different causes that she held close to her heart — the fight against AIDS, clearing landmines, and helping the homeless. Meghan’s favorite causes are not exactly the same, but her work helping those less fortunate is incredible, particularly her dedication to clearing up the stigma around menstruation and helping girls and women all over the world have equal access to school despite their unique challenges growing up. We think that’s something Diana could get behind — and would love to help out with.

As an actress, Meghan believes in the arts.

Through her work and her father’s, Meghan Markle was practically raised in the arts. She grew up on her father’s sets while he worked as a lighting designer, and it wasn’t long before she was acting herself. Diana may have preferred the ballet, but we imagine she would’ve been excited to bear witness to any kind of artistic endeavors. And though Meghan is leaving her role on Suits and may not return to acting, chances are she’ll continue Diana’s patronage of the arts.

She has excellent style.

Decades later, some of Diana’s style moments are still iconic. With Meghan following in Kate Middleton’s footsteps and having her coats and dress sell out in minutes after she’s spotted wearing them, it seems like she’ll leave a similar legacy behind. And a well-deserved one, too.

In the ring that Prince Harry used to propose to his fiancée, two diamonds from his mother’s personal collection flank the main stone. It’s a beautiful piece of jewelry, but all the more amazing for how it honors Harry’s family and includes her in this special moment. Meghan is proud to wear them on her finger — and we’re sure Diana would be proud to have her wear them.

Harry said they would’ve been best friends.
