Richard Gere and Carey Lowell may have parted ways in September after 11 years of marriage, but they’re determined to keep their family intact.

In the new issue of Closer, sources reveal that the ex-couple have remained a family unit for the sake of their 13-year-old son, Homer.

The source shares that Richard and Carey have actually made a point to continue spending time with their son together — and that includes sharing family meals, taking Homer to sporting events and making sure he knows that his parents will always be around.

“They are great parents,” an insider exclusively tells Closer, “and they want to make his life as normal as possible.”

In fact, the family came together just weeks ago to celebrate Christmas at their favorite Italian eatery in Greenwich, CT. Richard got up and started singing along with the house piano player.

“He spent about half an hour singing, to the delight of everyone,” a fellow patron shares. “The room was packed and they all got up and cheered and clapped for him. It was truly a wonderful night.”

“There is a lot of love and respect there,” the insider says of Richard and Carey’s relationship. “They really still want to be a family, in whatever shape that turns out to be.”
