Actor Dermot Mulroney, who has been a Hollywood heartthrob since the ’80s, recently turned 54 years old and tells Closer Weekly in a candid interview he is well aware of his good fortune.

“It’s only in the last year or two that I’ve looked back and taken stock, weighing decisions I’ve made. I have such deep appreciation for what people have done for me, and there’s a lot I’m proud of,” Dermot tells Closer.

Dermot, who is “crazy about” his new Hallmark Channel movie, The Christmas Train, is also known for his classic roles in My Best Friend’s Wedding, August: Osage County, Young Guns, and The Wedding Date. “I’m really comfortable with what I’ve accomplished and all the blessings in my life,” he tells Closer. “I’m so happy to be where I am.”

Dermot tells Closer he is especially proud of his son Clyde, 18 (from his first marriage to actress Catherine Keener), and his daughters Mabel, 9, and Sally, 8, with his wife, Tharita Cesaroni, 43.

“I’m a like traveling salesman who has to leave town to make a living. There’s a lot of time I’ve missed, but I know I’ve done everything in my power to make up for it, or be fully absorbed in fathering when I’m there.”

And how does he feel about his sex symbol status? “Everyone is so nice to me when they meet me — men, women, kids. I feel so much good will. So if someone thinks I’m handsome, that’s fine, but what I see is joy and gratitude. Every time someone stops me, they are smiling. That means a lot to me.”
