Cyndi Lauper Gushes About Her Marriage To Husband David Thorton: ‘He Is My Best Friend’ (Exclusive)

No one knows that girls just wanna have fun better than Cyndi Lauper. But even she couldn’t have imagined a more joyful day than when she married her husband, actor David Thornton, 65.

“All I can say is that he is my best friend, he’s wildly creative and I just wanted to share my whole life with him,” Cyndi, 65, exclusively told Closer Weekly — in the magazine’s latest issue, on newsstands now! — of their Nov. 24, 1991, nuptials. “And that’s what’s happened.”

The pair had a son, Dex (who just turned 21), and are as happy as ever, thanks to a simple approach Cyndi gleaned from the spouse of another rock legend. “I heard George Harrison’s wife say once that the secret [to marriage] is to stay married and work it out,” she said. And for 27 years, it’s worked time after time.

Since Cyndi and David already know that a marriage takes a lot of hard work, the couple has discussed Cyndi possibly slowing down or retiring from her music career. “We also talked about ‘When you’re done, you’re done. You don’t have to do any more. You do what you want to do and that’s it,'” Cyndi said in a previous interview with ABC. “[We’re] a couple that’s trying to raise a kid and trying to still be together.”

Cyndi tries to be the best mom that she can be for Dex, too, even though at times it feels as if he’s more mature than her. Cyndi recalled a time when she accidentally cursed on live TV — and her son gave her a lot of flak for it.

“He said, ‘What Dad always says that if you don’t curse when it’s not important, you won’t curse when it is,'” Cyndi explained. “And I was thinking, “F–k yeah.’ No, I’m kidding, no, no, I’m thinking, ‘I know, Dex. I know, it was a long day, you know.’ It’s hard to be me.”

At the end of the day, Cyndi just wants to prove how much of a “real” parent she is. “I don’t want to be a fake parent,” she said. “I don’t want to be a fake singer. I don’t want to be a fake writer. I don’t want to be fake anything. I want to be the real thing!”
