Former MTV VJ Vanessa Lachey went through one of the most difficult times in her life when her 2-year-old son, Phoenix Robert, was hospitalized for a respiratory syncytial virus shortly after being born.

“He was in the hospital for seven days in the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit),” she recently revealed to E! News on their Mom2Mom segment. “[We] could have almost lost him.”

Vanessa, 38, shares Phoenix — as well as her son Camden, 6, and daughter Brooklyn, 4 — with husband Nick Lachey. When Phoenix was still in the hospital, Vanessa remembers her marriage with Nick, 45, was slowly falling apart. “[It was] definitely the hardest part in my life and also in my marriage,” she recalled. “Not in a negative way, just in a very challenging way.”

To try and save their marriage, Nick told Vanessa he was going to take care of their two oldest kids at the time so she could “focus” all her energy on their new baby. “I did not leave [Phoenix’s] side in the hospital,” she explained. “Thankfully, I have such a supportive husband.”

By splitting their time with the kids, Nick and Vanessa were able to make it work and save their marriage, even though they never talked about what bothered them. “Nick actually mentioned the other day, ‘I don’t know if we’ve ever gotten over that.’ We’ve never really talked about it and gotten over it. We’ve still kind of just been playing catch-up since then, you know?” she explained. “It’s an intense time.”

Vanessa and Nick are still taking their marriage day by day. For now, they’re just glad that their son is out of the hospital and at home with his family.

“There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t thank God for giving you to us and keeping you safe, healthy and happy. You are so LOVED!!!” Vanessa gushed on Instagram on December 25. “Thank You for completing our family and being the BEST Christmas miracle we could ever ask for!”

We’re so glad everything ended up OK in the end!
