Each season the CW presents a crossover event that brings together cast members from the superhero TV series Supergirl, The Flash, and Arrow. This year’s storyline — airing from Dec. 9 to Dec. 11 — has been given the umbrella title “Elseworlds,” and in addition to such regulars as Melissa Benoist, Grant Gustin, and Stephen Amell, it marks the return of Tyler Hoechlin as Superman and introduces Elizabeth Tolluch as Lois Lane. And it not only features Tyler in the traditional uniform of the Man of Steel but has him in a black outfit as well as part of an altered reality that pits Superman against the other superheroes.
As noted, the new element of the show is introducing Lois Lane, who has been talked about in previous episodes but never shown. “We established that this Superman has been around,” says Tyler of his earlier appearances. “He’s been doing this for a while, so obviously his relationship with Lois has also been there for a while and it’s a very strong, solid relationship at this point. They’re very much an item.”
Tyler first played Superman in season two of Supergirl, immediately capturing the imagination of the audience and continuing to spur rumors that a new Superman show is in the works that will feature him.
“I cannot confirm anything like that,” he laughs. “I’m in the same position as you guys, so I hear all the same things you do. I have no idea where it comes from or necessarily where it starts. But it’s the world of TV and movies. I mean, anything can happen. That’s to be determined, but for now, we’ve got the crossover and then we’ll see what else.”
Back when Tyler was first cast as Superman, we sat down with him for a wide-ranging, and in-depth, exclusive interview that began with his childhood passion for baseball and tracked his gradual evolution to acting in films like Road to Perdition and TV shows like 7th Heaven, Teen Wolf and, of course, Supergirl.
