Tom Selleck 'Very Happy' About Donnie Wahlberg's New Blue Bloods Show
“Cold Comfort” – Frank contends with a potentially dirty cop within his ranks when Danny and Baez’s investigation into a brutal assault on an NYPD detective reveals evidence the officer may be corrupt. Also, Eddie and Badillo track down the culprits behind the theft of valuable rare works from a celebrated bookstore; Jamie begrudgingly joins Henry as he looks into an old friend’s death he deems suspicious; and Erin snoops into the background of a new woman in Anthony’s life, on the CBS Original series BLUE BLOODS, Friday, Jan. 28 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.* Pictured: Tom Selleck as Frank Reagan and Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan. Tom Selleck is “very happy” for onscreen son Donnie Wahlberg, as he’s set to star in a new Blue Bloods expansion series on CBS, an insider exclusively tells Closer.

“They still talk all the time so he’s known about this before almost anyone and he’s been very encouraging,” the insider says of Tom, 80, and Donnie’s bond amid the big news. “Tom is happy that the network isn’t letting this franchise totally die. He still doesn’t get why it had to end, but he’s had to accept it.”

Blue Bloods aired its final episode of season 14 in December 2024, and since then, fans have been pleading with CBS for a spinoff or a continuation of the franchise. Luckily, their pleas have been answered, as they’ll get to see Donnie, 55, continue the story of his character, Danny Reagan, in the Blue Bloods offshoot, which is currently under the working title Boston Blue.

The offshoot will premiere at some point during the 2025-2026 broadcast season, CBS revealed in a press release on Tuesday, February 18. Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis are serving as showrunners on the newly announced series.

As Donnie prepares for his next gig, it seems like Tom is enjoying his downtime at his 63-acre avocado ranch in Ventura County, California, with his wife, Jillie Mack, as the quest for his next project continues.

“He’s enjoying his time with Jillie on their farm, the downtime has been great, but he’s still got the fire in his belly to keep working,” the insider reveals. “He loves what he does, and Jillie fully supports him continuing on. No doubt she enjoys having him home more, they’re still very much in love so having him gone away on set for 12 hours or more at a time isn’t easy for her.”

“Loyalty” – Jaime goes undercover with a deadly human trafficking ring and Danny and Baez investigate a homicide connected to Darryl Reid (Malika Yoba), Danny’s old partner. Also, Frank grapples with whether to publicly support Mayor Chase (Dylan Walsh) on a policy decision and Eddie is determined to teach a young shoplifter a lesson, on part one of the two-part premiere of the fourteenth season of BLUE BLOODS, Friday, Feb. 16 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. “It’s also no secret that Tom gets a little stir crazy when he’s just stuck home all the time, even with their huge property,” the insider continues. “Jillie is an actor too, she gets it and loves to see Tom thriving.”

It has not yet been revealed if any members of the Blue Bloods cast will be joining Donnie in the new series. But the source maintains Tom is thrilled that the franchise will continue on CBS with Donnie as the lead.

“The details of the show and how much, or how little, Tom will be involved are still all under wraps, but Tom very openly supportive and pleased,” the insider says.

As for the plot of Boston Blue, CBS shared in a press release that “Wahlberg will reprise his role as NYPD officer Danny Reagan as he takes a position with Boston PD.

Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”

After the announcement about Boston Blue was made, many fans voiced their excitement on X and questioned whether or not Tom would be part of the new show.

“I wish Danny and his new show all the success but this is not Blue Bloods without Commissioner Tom Selleck,” one person wrote on X.

Another said, “Aww Tom Selleck was heartbroken when blue bloods got canceled. Hopefully he’s on this show.”

“Is Tom Selleck being cast in the spinoff of Blue Bloods? Or just Donnie Wahlberg?” another person asked.
