Everyone feared the worst when Chet Hanks, the troubled son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, told his Internet followers, in an ominous online message, that he was getting “out of Dodge.”
The mysterious message was followed up by a tabloid report that Chet was missing. But although the note was worrisome (after all, at 25, Chet has already been to rehab for drug abuse once), his parents aren’t panicked about this latest rumor. “He’s not missing — at least to them,” says an insider. “They are in contact with him.”

A friend of Chet’s also confirms to Closer that he’s OK. “He’s just taking a break from everybody — society, I mean,” says the pal. (A rep for Tom also denied reports that Chet was missing.)

Still, Tom, 59, and Rita, 58, have never stopped being concerned about their son, and this past year (in which there were reports that Chet trashed a London hotel room) hasn’t been easy for them. “Their biggest fear is that Chet will OD and be found lying somewhere between Las Vegas and LA,” says a family insider.
Another pal concurs. “They fear that his behavior is going to escalate to the point where he gets into trouble he can’t get out of — either by landing in jail or ultimately dying,” says the friend.
