Tom Hanks made the talk show rounds yesterday looking a little thinner than usual. Appearing on David Letterman, the star revealed the reason for his recent weight loss. He has Type 2 Diabetes.

The two-time Oscar winner said that he has struggled with his blood pressure since the age of 36 and that his doctor broke the news of his diagnosis with, “You've graduated. You've got Type 2 diabetes, young man."

As concerned gasps filled the audience, Hanks quickly explained that his condition is “controllable” and that he’s been “maintaining the temple,” in an effort to manage the diagnosis.

Hanks isn’t the first celebrity to battle this type of diabetes. Other celebrities who have been diagnosed include Halle Berry, Drew Carey, and former American Idol judge Randy Jackson.

The Captain Phillips star also told Letterman that his doctor advised him to weigh as much as he did in high school if he wants to rid himself of the diabetes completely. The only problem? Hanks weighed only 96 pounds back then.

“I said to her, 'Well I'm gonna have Type 2 diabetes,'" he joked. “There was no way I was gonna weigh what I weighed in high school.”

A Hanks’ family friend says that there was never a question of whether Hanks would share his diagnosis with fans. “The family lives a very private life,” says the source, “but he wanted to be upfront about what he was going through.”

And Hanks is certainly not facing this latest challenge alone. “Rita is his rock,” says the friend of actress Rita Wilson, Hanks' wife of 25 years. “They are getting through this together. They're working with doctors to figure out a diet plan and they will implement it together.”
