Tom Hanks Attended Princess Diana’s Funeral — Plus See More Stars Who Where There
Twenty years ago, Princess Diana’s funeral was one of the saddest days in history. And while royal fans mourned the loss of the People’s Princess on television, celebrities including Tom Hanks were there to express their sympathies to Prince William, Prince Harry, and the rest of Diana’s family and friends.

There were photos of Tom, Diana, and Tom’s wife, Rita Wilson, chatting with the late royal at a film premiere in England back in 1995, so it can be assumed that the couple was friends with her. There are snapshots of Tom at the funeral standing next to famed movie director Steven Spielberg, who also attended the sad event. Steven and Diana were often photographed together at various movie premieres throughout the ’80s and ’90s.
While at the ceremony, Steven was spotted chatting with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, who were married at the time before their 2001 split. Similarly, Tom and Nicole had met Diana at previous movie premieres in the ’90s before her untimely death.
Also in attendance was the President of the US at the time, Bill Clinton, and his wife and Former First Lady, Hillary Clinton. Hillary and Diana had gotten together on numerous occasions prior to her passing. The late and great George Michael, who sadly died from natural causes on Christmas Day last year, was also there after meeting Diana at concerts over the years. He stood next to famed singer Elton John, who played a very special role at the event.
Perhaps the most touching moment from her funeral was when Elton performed a rendition of his hit song “Candle in the Wind.” The tune was originally sung to Marilyn Monroe, so Elton tweaked the lyrics to dedicate it to Diana. The 70-year-old star was accompanied by his husband, David Furnish, at the event.

Diana sadly died on Aug. 31, 1997 (this past summer marked the 20th anniversary of her death), after being involved in a tragic car crash. She was 36 years old at the time of her passing — and she will forever be missed.
