Val Kilmer Is Reportedly Returning for the Upcoming ‘Top Gun’ Sequel

It seems Val Kilmer still has the need for speed with co-star Tom Cruise! According to TheWrap, Val will be returning for the Top Gun sequel, titled Top Gun: Maverick, in his role as Iceman.

Although someone with knowledge of the upcoming movie shared this news with the outlet, Val has yet to confirm the news (although we hope he does soon so Tom has his wingman). However, the actor — who has spent the past two years battling cancer — has allegedly been seen around the San Diego hotel near the set of the movie.

However, we do know for sure that Tom is on board (pun intended)! On Wednesday, May 30, the A-list actor took to Instagram to share the first photo from Top Gun 2 — and we must say, now we really can’t wait for the sequel.

“#Day1,” he captioned a promotional poster of himself in his Pete “Maverick” Mitchel uniform with the phrase “feel the need” across it. Fans were quick to express their joy in the photo’s caption as well. “OMG!!! Chills!!” one fan wrote. “This is going to be freaking amazing!!” another added. One said, “Tom Cruise will always be Maverick to me.”

Fans have been eager about a Top Gun sequel ever since the producer Jerry Bruckheimer took to Twitter in January 2016 to share a photo of himself with the 1986 movie’s star after the pic’s caption totally hinted a Top Gun sequel was in the works!

“Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2,” the 74-year-old filmmaker wrote on the micro-blogging site. Adding more fuel to the fire? Tom, 55, retweeted the photo at the time.

Tom previously starred as Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the Oscar-winning action film about a group of Naval aviators who train at the Fighter Weapons School at Miramar in San Diego during the mid-1980s.

It has not yet been confirmed what the plot will be about, but in a previous interview with ComingSoon.net, the film’s director, Joe Kosinski, noted how different the Navy is today, so he will have to “adapt” with the sequel.

“Back then, they hadn’t been in any war for 15 or 20 years at that point,” he said. “The tone of that movie and what those guys were doing was very different. Now, here in 2017, the Navy’s been at war for 20 years. It’s just a different world now, so you can’t remake the first movie.”

Kosinski added, “That being said, I certainly want to recreate the experience of that movie, which gives you a front-seat into the world of Naval aviation and what it’s like to be in a fighter jet. The approach is going to be appropriate for the times we live in.”

We can’t wait until Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on July 12, 2019!
