Though Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle is now living a completely different life from the one she used to know, it seems as though some aspects of her past will continue to pervade into her royal world. Her estrangement from father Thomas Markle has been the subject of a lot of scrutiny as Meghan’s role as Duchess has taken shape over the last few months, but recently her father has made some more desperate attempts to bury the hatchet with Meghan, including releasing some old but sweet notes from her, according to the Daily Mail.

“I loved getting cards from Meghan,” Thomas, 74, told the Daily Mail. “She wrote me hundreds of little cards and notes through the years. Sometimes they were for special occasions, other times just little notes she would leave around the house. I’ve still got a Post-It Note on my fridge which says, ‘I love you Daddy.’ I see it every day. I got a card every Valentine’s Day.” Thomas even showed off an old Valentine’s Day card from Meghan, possibly the sweetest note of them all.

“Daddy… I don’t express as often as I should how much you mean to me. Everything you do for me has turned me into who I am and I am so grateful. All I want to do is make you proud… and I promise, no matter what, I’ll do it. Thank you for everything daddy. I love you with all of my heart now and forever. Love Bean,” the card read, with the send-off reportedly referencing a childhood nickname Thomas used for her.

Those don’t sound like disingenuous words, especially not from a Duchess who seems to stay so true to herself and her ideals. According to Thomas, he has “hundreds” of letters just like those from Meghan, 37, who reportedly lived with him from age eleven until heading off to college.

Now, Thomas is trying to do everything he can to get the Daddy’s girl he knew from these letters back into his life. He reportedly sent several texts that haven’t bounced back but also haven’t been returned, either. He also wrote his daughter a two-page letter and sent it certified mail to her representation. He’s even gone as far as reportedly hand delivering his ex-wife, Meghan’s mom Doria Ragland, a letter asking why their daughter won’t return his calls.

“People are trying to rewrite history,” Thomas told the Daily Mail. “Meghan and I were as close as a father and daughter could be right up until her wedding to Harry. Then it all fell apart.”

If Thomas and Meghan were in fact as close as described, it would be a serious shame for the two to continue to be at odds, especially with Meghan and Prince Harry’s first baby to come in the spring. Let’s hope Meghan and her dad can let the past go, for the sake of their future.
