'The Sopranos' Cast: See Pictures of Them Then and Now!

Can you believe that it’s been 21 years since the first episode of The Sopranos aired? Neither can we! Since then, the iconic cast of the New Jersey mobster series has changed so much, which is why we’re taking a look at what they’ve been up to since the series finale in 2007 — a.k.a. pretty much the saddest day of our lives.

Ever since the show ended, fans have been crossing their fingers for a reboot, even though it would never be the same without the late James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano). Entertainment Weekly spoke with the series’ creator, David Chase, about reviving Sopranos and, as it turns out, he’s not interested in bringing it back after all these years.

“I wouldn’t want to see that happen, no,” he said. “Like recasting? Everybody’s getting older, you can’t match people anymore.” However, he did give us some hope! “I could conceive of maybe a prequel of The Sopranos,” David added. “I could never see [a return of the show] except as a prequel.”

David was being totally truthful, it seems, because he is co-producing and co-writing a screenplay for a prequel film, titled The Many Saints of Newark. Alan Taylor is directing the movie, which is based on the hit series and actually stars James’ son, Michael Gandolfini, as a young Tony. Rounding out the cast are Alessandro Nivola, Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga and Billy Magnussen — among others. It’s set to be released on September 25, 2020.

Since Sopranos, TV has obviously changed a lot, so Deadline asked David how he would feel if the show existed in the world of “binge-watching.” David said, “I think I would have preferred to keep it on Sundays as appointment television. It’s just the way I was brought up; it’s what I’m used to and I like the feeling of each week being opening night with something different and new and possibilities.”

He added, “My favorite thing about The Sopranos was when I heard that people were having viewing parties. I thought, Wow, that was really satisfying. They did it Italian-style, served wine and pizza. It seems like things have to be really good to withstand that binge-watching and repeat binge-watching. It must be pretty difficult to produce something like that.” We’ll be right back, just going to rewatch The Sopranos until The Many Saints of Newark is here!
