Even though Patrick J. Adams is returning for season 9 of Suits, Meghan Markle will, for obvious reasons, will not. With just a few days before the final season hits your TV screen, we now know exactly how the Duchess of Sussex’s absence will be handled given the fact that she isn’t there while her onscreen husband is.
“For Mike this is just a trip to New York, you know?” Patrick, 37, told Entertainment Tonight. “There’s phone calls with Rachel and saying ‘goodbye’ and ‘I love you.’ I think there’s some obviously acknowledgement that she’s still there and a part of the show and this is just a way for him to come see his friends one last time.”
Just last month, Closer Weekly confirmed that Patrick would be returning as Mike Ross for “multiple” episodes and that Meghan’s Rachel Zane wouldn’t be showing up at all — despite creator Aaron Korsh loving the idea. The two, who starred since the beginning, left Suits at the end of season 7 after their characters tied the knot.
With or without Meghan, 37, Patrick is excited to be returning to the legal drama one last time. “The minute I landed on set it was as if I’d been gone for, like, a day,” he revealed. “Ultimately it just feels like coming home.”
Earlier this year, during the Television Critics Association press tour, Aaron noted that he was hopeful for Patrick’s return, indicating that it was simply a matter of ironing out the details. He also put the chances of Meghan returning “pretty close to zero” despite the fact that it would be a huge ratings win for the series.
This is totally understandable since Meghan is a new mom to son Archie with husband Prince Harry in May 2019. Patrick, for the record, became a new dad to a daughter with wife Troian Bellisario in October 2018.
The 10-episode final season of Suits premieres Wednesday, July 17, at 9 p.m. ET on USA.
