Bruce Hyde, an actor most known for playing Lt. Kevin Riley on Star Trek, has died. He was 74-years-old.

Bruce passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 13 after a long battle with throat cancer, his wife, Susan Saetre, confirmed to Entertainment Weekly.

In addition to his role on Star Trek, the star appeared on hit TV shows including Dr. Kildare, That Girl and The Beverly Hillbillies. He later retired from showbiz to become a professor at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, where he taught courses in both the Theatre & Film Department and the Communication Studies Department.

“There were so many layers to him,” Bruce’s wife, Susan, told EW of her late husband. “He was an actor, a singer, a musician, a writer, an artist. He had so many different complexities to him, but I think the thing that best fit him was being a teacher. He was able to blend all of those in his teaching.”
