On paper, Sofía Vergara had a banner year in 2024 thanks to her sizable Netflix hit Griselda and her prominent voice role in the box office smash Despicable Me 4, along with numerous still-growing ongoing business ventures, but a source who has known the star for years exclusively tells Closer that she’s feeling under appreciated and at a loss how to move forward to become a bona fide A-lister in the cutthroat world of Hollywood.
“Sofía had this brilliant year and there’s this empty feeling around her that nobody cared or even paid attention,” the insider says, “and she was in major hits in 2024.”
According to the insider, Sofía’s downward spiral began in September. “It all started at the Emmys,” the friend says, “where she went in a sure thing and came out an also-ran.”
Sofía, 52, was nominated for outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie for Griselda, but ultimately lost out to Jodie Foster. After the awards, the Modern Family alum joked that she was “robbed,” but the source says there was more than just a kernel of truth to what she said.
Losing out on an award can hurt, but the lingering disappointment began to affect other parts of the actress’ life as her self confidence took a hit. “This dark cloud has also screwed up her personal life, too,” the insider says, adding that her wallowing is “making her single again.”
In early October, Sofía gave an update on her relationship status that caused speculation she had split from Dr. Justin Saliman, her orthopedic surgeon beau she’s been linked to since October 2023.
Speaking to Us Weekly, the mother-of-one said, “now I’m single so … kind of single,” when discussing whether she prefers dating in New York City to Los Angeles. While the admission was cagey, it certainly means her relationship with the good doc isn’t on a high note.

The insider insists that, now single, there’s no “shortage of men who want to date her, but Sofía is really letting these setbacks get to her, and that’s a big change.” The dream of A-list stardom is fading for the Colombian actress, which has been weighing on Sofía’s shoulders ever since her snub.
“As successful as Sofía has been, becoming a true A-lister and not having to fight tooth-and-nail for every single job and opportunity she gets has been elusive,” the source continues, “Sofía’s not done with Hollywood – there’s still a lot she wants to do – but some air has leaked out of the balloon, so to speak.”
Not all is lost, however. Griselda is still up for more awards that can lift Sofía’s spirits and reignite her confidence in her work and personal life, and the actress is currently working on more voicework: “She still has a couple more shots at significant televised awards for Griselda, at the upcoming Golden Globes and at the 2025 SAG Awards especially.”
Still, having her heart broken once, the insider is quick to note that “she’s not getting her hopes up and she’s certainly not at the point where she’s picking out dresses.”
