It has been a rough couple of months for View co-host Sherri Shepherd, who not only filed for divorce but is also embroiled in two separate custody battles.

The 47-year-old, however, is doing her best to stay optimistic, speaking out about her personal troubles for the first time.

“I know that you cannot grow without pain,” Sherri recently said at the 13th Annual Samsung Hope for Children Gala in New York City.

“Growth is hard and growth is a struggle, and it hurts and you’ve got to go through that in order to grow or you stay the same.”

The comedienne, who separated from second husband Lamar Sally after 3 years of marriage, is currently gearing up for a fight in court over their unborn child, due in July via surrogate.

“I feel as long as you can get up and look up, you have another chance and another chance to make things right,” Sherri said at the event. “Again, going through all my craziness, I hope that my character and my integrity speaks for me, so I stand behind that.”

And for the time being, dating is the farthest thing from the actress’ mind. “I may not be the best person to ask at this time about a guy,” she admitted with a laugh. “But check back with me in a year about that subject!”

She is also set to face ex-husband Jeff Tarpley in court, who has requested full custody of their 9-year-old son Jeffrey.

“I try to bring my son up to be a kind person,” she told E! News, after her ex accused her of neglect.

“My son loves making people laugh and I think that will get a girl any day, any time. If you can make a woman laugh, that’s like gold, but I think being kind and being able to forgive [is most important],” she continued.

“You really have to be able to forgive and you have to be kind to one another. That’s what Meryl Streep told me: ‘Be kind.'”
