Savannah Guthrie Asks Tom Hanks to Be Her Coanchor on ‘Today’: ‘Wouldn’t That Be Great?’

Savannah Guthrie eagerly asked Tom Hanks to be her coanchor on Today and the actor gave a witty response when she tried to persuade him.

Tom, 68, was grilled about taking on the daytime talk show gig when he stopped by the iconic NBC Studios at Rockefeller Center in New York City.

“Are you going to coanchor with me ever?” she asked in a clip posted to Today’s official Instagram on Thursday, February 20. “Wouldn’t that be great?” Tom replied, quipping, “I’m not getting up that early, lady.”

“Come on!” Savannah, 53, playfully pleaded, to which he replied, “And I am not reading all that research.”

The journalist wasn’t done pushing the subject yet as she offered one more option, going on to suggest, “We’ll do it as a gag.”

“No, I’m sorry,” Tom said with a smile. “It would have to be for the full week.”

Savannah was beaming when he made that remark and joked, “Twist my arm!”

“By the way, will I be cranky on Friday morning,” the Castaway star said, while she kindly assured him, “Your cranky is like everyone else’s best day.”

“I will say when I’m cranky, I’m pretty damn hilarious. I must say,” Tom continued.

During his appearance, Tom spoke candidly about the new nature documentary series that he narrated called The Americas, which took half a decade and 180 expeditions to capture in full. “Narrating is an interesting way of talking about it because yeah, they wrote great copy … but a ton of it is also just me reacting to this footage,” he shared.

In the caption of the Instagram post, Tom got another formal invite to appear on Today. “Tom Hanks, our couch is always open for you. Come coanchor with @savannahguthrie and @craigmelvinnbc whenever you want!” it read.

Former Dateline host-turned-Today sensation Craig Melvin quickly became a fan-favorite and previously opened up about his early wake-up time and getting used to his new schedule following news he would be stepping in as Hoda Kotb’s replacement.

“[My alarm] used to go off at 4:15 a.m. if there was something big happening that morning, 4:30 a.m. if it was a slow morning,” Craig, 45, told TODAY.com in an interview published on January 15. “I have to get up at 3:45 a.m.” he said. “Which, when you say it out loud, it’s like, ‘Ooh, that stinks. That stinks.’”

Craig noted that he has been utilizing a “triple alarm system” to help him get up in time for the show. “I’ve got my radio alarm clock that’s on my nightstand,” the dad of two said. “Then I set two alarms on my phone, as well, just in case I oversleep one. It’s hard to oversleep all three.”

“That’s the thing about the shift, you really have to commit to a regimen to make it work,” Craig admitted. “I take my multivitamin, I’ve got this electrolyte mix that I use,” he went on. “I take my allergy meds and I shave every morning. That’s it. That’s the end of the routine.”
