Sandra Bullock’s Misses Bryan Randall ‘Dearly’: Love and Family Matter ‘Most’ to Her

When Sandra Bullock and her Speed costar Keanu Reeves took the stage at Los Angeles’ Egyptian Theatre on October 8, they received a standing ovation from the audience. Thirty years  after Speed roared into theaters, becoming one of the top-grossing films of 1994, the stars reunited with its director for a Q&A. Onstage, Sandra smiled for the cameras during her first public appearance since the death of her partner, photographer Bryan Randall, in August 2023. Her last film, The Lost City, was released the previous summer. “If it weren’t for Keanu, who she loves, and the fans, she probably would have passed on the Speed event,” says a friend. “She’s still not ready to fully immerse herself in work.”

Making Speed with Keanu, when Sandra was just another largely unknown actress, cemented their friendship. “I was the new kid on the block, and it was nerve-racking,” she recalled about the film that would earn over $350 million worldwide on just a $30 million budget. But the chemistry between Sandra and Keanu was perfect from the start and became a huge part of the film’s wide appeal. “I knew we had something very early on,” says director Jan de Bont. “I saw Keanu and Sandra working as a team and doing most of the stunts themselves.”

That easy rapport made the actors, who also starred in 2006’s The Lake House, friends in real life, too. “Sandra adores Keanu. He’s like a brother. She’d do anything for him, and vice versa,” says the friend.

In the year since Bryan’s death, Sandra has put all her energy into her close relationships. “Sandra has learned that love, commitment and family are what matters most in the world,” says the friend. “What she had with Bryan was very precious. She’s grateful to have had it as long as she did, but she misses it dearly.”

WHERE THE HEART IS

Since the latter days of Bryan’s affliction with ALS, Sandra has put a greater priority on her home life. Watching her children, Louis, 14, and Laila, 11, grow up has helped her to heal. “She wants to be there when they wake up, when they come home from school. She wants to help them with their homework, cook for them, watch movies together, do the typical family things,” says the friend. “In processing grief. She has started having more good than bad days.”

“She’s keeping busy reading books and catching up on old movies,” says the friend, who notes that the actress is not ready to date. “Her thinking is that if it happens organically, fine, but she’s not pursuing it. The dating apps terrify her, but her friends are ready to set her up when she’s ready.”

The Oscar winner for The Blind Side is expected to star in Practical Magic 2, a sequel to her 1998 film with Nicole Kidman. “Sandra does go through other scripts and has some dream projects, but nothing is set in stone,” explains the friend. “She’s in no rush. There’s no question that Sandra is happiest when she’s with her children, her family, and her closest friends.”
