Even more than 20 years after her tragic death, Princess Diana‘s enduring legacy is still living on within Britain’s royal family. In fact, during a new interview with People, royal biographer Andrew Morton revealed that today’s modern monarchy is actually the “mirror image” of the “inclusive” and “accessible” royal family that the People’s Princess hoped to create during her lifetime.

“Ever since Queen Victoria’s reign nearly 200 years ago, women have dominated and rules the House of Windsor,” Morton said. “And in many ways the royal family today is a mirror image of what Diana always wanted. It’s more inclusive, it’s more touchy-feely. It’s more accessible.”

As adults, Princess Diana’s two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, have greatly helped modernize the monarchy with their passions for charity work and insistence on living as normal of a life as they can in the royal spotlight. Two of the royal family’s newest members, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, have also greatly helped move the crown’s traditional ideologies into the 21st century.

The addition of American divorcée Meghan into the royal fold has been an especially big and progressive move for Queen Elizabeth‘s family. So much so that people are already comparing Meg to Princess Diana and think she’ll be the next People’s Princess.

“One of the things that Harry fell for in Meghan early on in their relationship is just how empathetic and compassionate she is,” a source previously told Us Weekly of the Duchess of Sussex. “Meghan wants to make a difference in the world. It’s one of the reasons she was so keen to get started with her charity work as soon as she married Harry. This is her life now… She’s found her true purpose.”

“Senior aides at Buckingham Palace are already talking about just how strong Meghan’s global influence will be over the years ahead and how that will make her an incredibly important and powerful asset to the British royal family,” the insider added.
