In an exclusive new interview with Closer Weekly, Rita Wilson opens up about how being a breast cancer survivor has changed her outlook on life and sings the praises of husband Tom Hanks‘ constant support. “Once you’ve had cancer, every day is a gift,” Rita, 61, tells Closer. “I literally wake up every morning and say, thank you, God. What a gorgeous day.”

“I’m so glad to be alive, and then try to live my life remembering that every single moment of the day,” she continued. And being diagnosed in 2015 taught her what is most important in life, says the star. “You cherish your time more and who you spend your time with,” she admits. “You ask yourself, what is it that you want to do? Not just with your time, but with your future.”

Now, Rita is 100 percent cancer-free and tells Closer that she is feeling great and looking forward to her and Tom’s 30th anniversary in April, adding that their relationship is stronger than ever. “Our relationship was always strong, but I think it deepens your connection in a way because you’ve gone through something else together,” she says of beating cancer. To thank her husband for his unflinching support, the fledgling singer-songwriter penned a love song titled “Every Day.”
