She’s screaming it from the rooftops and singing it in the rain! Nearly 10 years after Rita Moreno lost her husband, Leonard Gordon, the actress has revealed she’d “rather eat glass” than get married again in the future. “Someone asked me recently if I would countenance on being married again and my answer was simple. I’d rather eat glass,” the 87-year-old told People. “I don’t want to get married. No, no, no, no, no.”

Though Rita has admitted she wasn’t always happy in her decades-long marriage to Leonard — which lasted from 1965 until his death in 2010 — she stuck with her husband for the sake of their daughter, Fernanda Luisa Fisher.

“I come from that era. I come from an era when you were supposed to obey the man in the family,” she said. “I didn’t know how to write a check for the longest time. I couldn’t even tell you when that was. But it was more recent than you might think.”

Rita continued, “I also feel that people who are in love very often collude. It’s a silent pact that people very often make in the sense that — in my case, it was ‘I’ll be the little girl, and you be the daddy.’ And that stopped working, of course, cause the little girl wanted to grow up and that’s when the trouble started. So I wasn’t happily married for a very long time.”

Since she isn’t focused on getting married again, Rita instead has her sights set on what’s next in her acting career — starring in the upcoming remake of West Side Story! In addition to having a part in the flick, the Hollywood icon just revealed she’s planning on being involved in the new cast’s rehearsals, too. “I’ll be visiting the rehearsals,” she told People, before joking that she’s eager to critique the stars’ dancing. “I’ll say, ‘You took that step out?! Are you crazy?!'”

Until then, Rita is just taking one day at a time and enjoying all that life has to offer. “I’m so happy,” she said. “I really am.”
