Rick Springfield revealed that he suffered brain damage after falling from a stage in 2000 and only learned about the condition 25 years later. Get updates as Closer takes a look at the singer’s health status, as well as how he’s tried to treat depression through “microdosing” on LSD.

How Did Rick Springfield Suffer Brain Damage?

The “Jessie’s Girl” rocker hit his head multiple times after taking a terrible fall while performing in Las Vegas in 2000.

“I fell 25 feet, hit my head and then wood came down and hit my head, and then my head hit the stage again,” Rick told People in an interview published on March 10, 2025.

At the time, he had only recently found out he suffered brain damage after undergoing a Prenuvo whole-body MRI scan.

“I thought I had just broken my wrist, but on the scan, I found out I have some brain damage from the fall, so I’m working on trying to repair that,” he told the outlet.

Rick Springfield’s Dad’s Death Changed His Outlook on Health and Wellness

The General Hospital alum said that while a lot of people “don’t want to know what’s wrong with them,” he’s the “opposite” because his dad’s life could have been saved if he had sought medical care about a health condition.

“My dad died from not wanting to know,” Rick explained. “He thought he had stomach cancer for years and never got it checked out. When he finally collapsed one day at home, they found out it was an ulcer that burst, and he died from the loss of blood. It could have been fixed if he had gotten it checked out.”

“That was a giant message to me: If you want to live long, you have to be prepared for some bad news now and then,” he added. “I could find out I have terminal cancer tomorrow and be dead in a year, but I can only do all I can do.”

Rick Springfield Exercises Daily and Watches What He Eats

“I exercise every day, and every time I play with my band, it is a two-hour aerobic workout. On the road we’re Planet Fitness whores. Planet Fitness is like the Holiday Inn of workout places — they’re all the same, every place you go,” the “Affair of the Heart” singer told People on February 28, 2025.

Rick said he mainly eats a pescatarian diet, although, “I’ll have meat now and then if I feel like feeling a little weak, but I don’t eat dairy or anything like that. I’m on a big anti-inflammation kick.”

Rick Springfield Tried Ketamine and LSD to Deal With Depression

“I wanted to see if [ketamine would] open a few things in my brain,” he told People about using the dissociative anesthetic to treat depression, which he’s struggled with since his teenage years.

“It was a creative experiment and an experiment on depression. I did it for as long as suggested, and I wasn’t a big fan,” Rick explained. “It made me feel heavy and machinelike. It didn’t change much in me — although I have been writing a lot, so you never know what kind of effect it has later on. It’s not a black-and-white kind of thing.”

“I did acid, and that was actually a little better,” he continued. “I hadn’t done that since I was in my 20s, but it was a great high. I don’t mean to push drugs on anyone, but I’m not averse to anything that helps me be happier and a better person. I could use some help in that area. I’m always searching.”

Rick Springfield Cut Back on Drinking Alcohol

The “Human Touch” singer said he dramatically scaled back on his alcohol intake started in 2023.

“I was drinking quite a bit, and as you get older, it’s kind of a natural thing to drop all that s–t,” he told the publication. “I’m not [in] AA — I mean, I know a lot of people it’s worked for. I’ll have a couple of sips of vodka or something when I’m onstage, but I don’t drink any other time.”
