Richard Gere sold the Connecticut home he owned for only two years at a loss, with plans to move out of the United States. Fans want to know more about the property and why he’s leaving the country.

When Did Richard Gere Sell His Connecticut Home?

The Officer and a Gentleman actor’s home in New Canaan, Connecticut, was sold at a loss in October 2024. It was originally listed at $10.8 million, but he accepted an offer of $10.75 for the estate.

Why Is Richard Gere Moving Abroad?

The Pretty Woman star revealed in April 2024 that he was moving to Madrid, Spain, in order to be closer to his wife, Alejandra Silva‘s family.

“It is a beautiful place, the food is extraordinary and the people exude sensitivity and generosity, as well as a strong will to laugh and enjoy,” Richard told Vanity Fair Spain. “So I’m looking forward to going there.” The couple plan to raise their sons Alexander and James in Madrid.

When Did Richard Gere Buy His Connecticut Home?

Richard purchased the home in July 2022, buying it from its longtime owners, singer-songwriters Paul Simon and his wife, Edie Brickell. The couple originally bought the estate in 2002, paying $16.5 million. They sold it at a massive $5.7 million loss to Richard after attempting to sell it in 2019 and 2020 at reduced prices.

What Amenities Did Richard Gere’s Home Include?

The six-bedroom and 11-bathroom main house was built by renowned architect Harold R. Sleeper in 1938. The 8,811-square-foot house features “period details,” including “soaring ceilings, captivating fireplaces, oversized windows, hand crafted millwork and an abundance of natural light,” according to a previous listing.

The property, known as the Brookwood estate, is “reflective of the English countryside, is a personal oasis boasting over 31 acres for outdoor exploration and boundless inspiration,” the listing described.

The secluded estate has “woodland trails, a rock rimmed brook, natural pond and tumbling waterfall,” as well as a pool, lush gardens and a three-bedroom guest cottage.

Despite the home’s remote location in bucolic New Canaan, it is only a 45-minute commute to New York City.

Richard Gere Wanted to Built a Farm on His Connecticut Estate

Richard and his wife wanted to convert 27 acres of the property to be used for farming, his lawyer submitted in plans to the New Canaan Planning and Zoning Commission in 2023.

The low-impact, private farm planned to “grow mushrooms and provide honey, with the potential of adding goats in the future,” the plan included. The farm never came to fruition during the time Richard owned the estate.

Who Bought Richard Gere’s Connecticut Home?

According to the New Canaan Advertiser, the home was bought by a Limited Liability Company listed as Brookwood Hills LLC. The company is registered to SBP homes, an all-inclusive general contracting and real estate development business owned by James Hoffman according to Connecticut state business records viewed by the publication.

The company, based in Stamford, Connecticut, boasts an “award-winning portfolio includes over 75 distinguished residences in Connecticut, Southampton, South Florida and New York City,” according to their website.
