Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington Will Co-Star in a New TV Show (We Can’t Wait!)
Apparently, Reese Witherspoon is having the time of her life producing and starring in TV series based on bestselling novels. Amid the success of her HBO show Big Little Lies, the Oscar winner has another limited series on the slate — and this time, she’s bringing Kerry Washington along for the ride!
The two actresses have signed on the dotted line as executive producers and stars of a limited series based on Little Fires Everywhere, the bestselling 2017 novel by Celeste Ng. Set in Celeste’s hometown of Shaker Heights, OH, the story tracks a picture-perfect family whose suburban existence is uprooted by the single mother who rents a house from them.
Liz Tigelaar, who recently served as showrunner for Casual, will adapt the book and lead the writers’ room for this project. The show is currently being pitched to premium and streaming networks, and it’s already attracting strong interest, so there’s very little chance we won’t see this show on television or online soon.
According to Deadline, Reese and Kerry independently became interested in bringing the story to the small screen. (Reese even picked Little Fires Everywhere for her book club in September.) Once the leading ladies discovered their mutual interest, they decided to team up. They both have production companies with deals at ABC Signature Studios, so it was practically kismet! “To say I love this book is an understatement,” Reese said, per Amazon. “It’s a deep psychological mystery about the power of motherhood, the intensity of teenage love, and the danger of perfection. It moved me to tears.”
This Little Fires Everywhere show isn’t the only project these two women are working on. Reese has three series in development for Apple’s new streaming platform, including a morning show drama starring herself and Jennifer Aniston and a comedy starring Kristen Wiig. And Kerry, whose show Scandal is winding down, has a comedy starring Alyson Hannigan in the works at ABC. Long story (or stories) short, we have a lot of quality television headed our way, thanks to these two powerhouse actresses. Just tell us where to throw our money!
