‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2 Will Include New Faces — Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Round two! Big Little Lies fans have reason to celebrate because Reese Witherspoon‘s hit show is returning for a second season. Originally, the HBO drama was created as a limited series based on the Liane Moriarty novel of the same name. But, after BLL received both critical and commercial acclaim — the network decided to renew it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Season 2 will kick off sometime in 2019 with production beginning in the spring of 2018.

Last year, the show’s creator David E. Kelly hinted a second season was in the works. “We’re kicking around ideas and trying to lasso the talent [and] get the band back together,” he explained. “It’s just a lot of logistical things. But I’m optimistic because everyone wants to do it. We feel we still have storytelling to do.” Keep scrolling to learn more about Big Little Lies Season 2!

Who is in the Big Little Lies cast?

The Big Little Lies cast, which includes Reese, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, Adam Scott, and Alexander Skarsgård, has also spoken out in recent months the upcoming season. In May 2017, Reese, 41, captioned an Instagram photo of herself with Nicole and Laura, “Spending #SundayFunday with these ladies… working on some new lies ???.”

Plus, it was previously announced that (drum roll please) Meryl Streep is joining the second season cast. The actress will portray Mary Louise Wright, mother of Perry Wright (played by Alexander). Perry fell to his death in the Season 1 finale, and it sounds like his mother will come sniffing around in the aftermath. “[She’s] concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following her son’s death,” HBO explained. “Mary Louise arrives in Monterey searching for answers.”

While Meryl is definitely the biggest star to join the cast, she’s not the only new addition. Deadline is reporting that Crystal Fox and Mo McRae are also joining the cast and Kathryn Newton, Robin Weigert, Merrin Dungey, and Sarah Sokolovic are returning to reprise their Season 1 roles.

Who much are Big Little Lies stars paid?

Stars and executive producers Reese and Nicole recieved major raises ahead of Season 2. According to The Hollywood Reporter, both Reese and Nicole will earn $1 million per episode of the series, marking a major leap from their initial salaries in the region of $250,000 to $350,000 for Season 1. This amount doesn’t include what the pair will eventually earn for their executive producer duties on the show, meaning that their final paycheck will be bigger still.

Who is directing Big Little Lies Season 2?

Though it seems the star-studded cast is eager to film the second season, the comedy-drama’s director, Jean-Marc Vallee, was less interested in continuing the project. “To do a season two, I’m not for it. Big Little Lies 2? Nah. We won’t give you a season two because it’s so good like this. Why spoil it?” he told The Hollywood Reporter in April 2017. However, after BLL won big at the 2017 Emmys, Jean-Marc changed his tune. “It’d be great to reunite the team and to do it. Are we going to be able to do it, altogether? I wish. We’ll see,” he reportedly said backstage at the awards show.

However, TV Line is now reporting that Jean-Marc has been forced to step away from season two of Big Little Lies because of scheduling conflicts. Showrunners instead found Oscar-winning director Andrea Arnold to join the upcoming season. Season 1 covered the entire book, so David will pen Season 2 based off a story written by Liane.

Stay tuned for more details about Season 2. Big Little Lies Season 1 is currently available to watch on HBO.
