Queen Elizabeth’s Cousin Marries Partner During First Same-Sex Wedding In Extended Royal Family
Royal history has been made! On Saturday, Sept. 22, Queen Elizabeth‘s cousin Lord Ivar Mountbatten married his partner, James Coyle, making the ceremony the first same-sex wedding the royal family has ever seen. What a time!
Ivar is a direct descendant of Queen Victoria and the great-nephew of Prince Philip’s uncle Earl Louis Mountbatten. He’s also the third cousin once removed of Elizabeth and the first of the British monarch’s extended family to be openly gay.
After the nuptials, he took to Instagram to share a photo of himself and James with a sweet message. “Well we did it finally! It was an amazing day despite the miserable British weather. Fabulous service conducted by Trish Harrogate, chief Registrar for Devon, who set the perfect but lighthearted tone for what is a serious occasion,” he wrote. “The accompanying gospel choir were amazing. Thank you so much to Bristol’s Teachers Rock Choir for your superb singing. Also @venetianorrington for the great photos. Most importantly a massive thanks to my 3 gorgeous girls for being so understanding and supportive, without their support this could never have happened! And finally, the biggest thank you to James for being just perfect… #WeDidIt #WonderfulDay #DespiteTheRain.”
Ivar famously came out as gay in 2016 after previously being married to his ex-wife, Penelope Anne Vere Thompson, from 1994 until 2011. The former duo has three daughters together.
The 55-year-old recently shared with The Daily Mail that he told Penny before they tied the knot that he was bisexual. And today, it appears they’re good friends considering she walked him down the aisle…
“Luckily for Future and former spouses. My daughters decided it was only right their Mum should walk me down the aisle and give me away to James. Here’s hoping he won’t say no at the last minute. ? #VeryCoolEx #ReadAllAboutIt #CantMakeMyMindUp,” he captioned a snap of himself, Penny, and James months before the wedding. We’re just glad everyone is happy!
