It was a royal family affair as members of the British royal family attended a lavish gathering on the grounds of Buckingham Palace. Princess Eugenie joined Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex for the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award presentations held at the palace gardens on Wednesday, May 22.

Princess Eugenie, 29, was all smiles as she met and greeted young recipients while accompanying her aunt and uncle at the prestigious awards event. The young royal looked happier than ever, smiling and laughing with some of the 3,000 men and women who showed up at the palace to collect their gold awards.

According to the Duke of Edinburgh Award website, achieving the award means having the “skills, determination and mentality to really succeed.” The Gold Duke of Edinburgh award is the highest level award that young people over the age of 16 can receive. There are four sections: volunteering, physical and skills, expedition and residential — all which have to be completed within a set amount of time.
