Royal family member Prince Philip was, apparently, very stunned after being involved in a serious car accident earlier this week. On Thursday, January 17, the Duke of Edinburgh, 97, overturned his Land Rover near his Sandringham estate. Luckily, there were no major injuries but the royal was understandably still shaken up by the whole ordeal.

Roy Warne, a retired lawyer, told BBC Radio Four‘s Today program that he asked Philip to “move his left leg and that freed his right leg and I helped him to get out.” The witness added that Queen Elizabeth‘s husband was “obviously shaken,” and “then he went and asked if everyone else [in the other car] was alright.”

While the Land Rover that Philip was in overturned, he was not injured, although the same can’t be said for the passengers in the second car. The 28-year-old mom who was driving the other vehicle in the collision suffered cuts to her knee. Her 45-year-old passenger also broke her wrist but, thankfully, the 9-month-old baby in the backseat was uninjured in the incident, according to local police in Norfolk, England.

Warne, who was one of the first people at the scene of the crash, also said, “It was an astonishing escape for everyone,” adding that it looked as if there “had been extraordinarily severe injuries. But fortunately the injuries were very light. People could have been killed — the impact must have been enormous.” He continued, “There was a little bit of blood and one of the royal entourage gave me a wipe to wipe my hands. The person in the car behind me also stopped and the passenger from that car took the baby in his arms after we’d freed it from the baby harness.”

In a statement, police said, “As is standard procedure with injury collisions, the incident will be investigated and any appropriate action taken. We are aware of the public interest in this case, however, as with any other investigation it would be inappropriate to speculate on the causes of the collision until an investigation is carried out.”

Fortunately, all involved were OK it seems. The duke is said to have been taken back to his home to recover.
