After Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot in a lavish royal wedding back in May, the 34-year-old Duke of Sussex started wearing a simple platinum wedding band on his left ring finger. But now, months later, Harry has been photographed also sporting a black band on his right hand — and the mysterious new ring has totally perplexed royal fans.

Luckily, Entertainment Tonight was able to figure out where Harry’s new piece of jewelry came from and why exactly he’s started wearing it. For those of you assuming the item is just a fashion accessory, sorry, you’re wrong. The ring is actually an Oura Ring, which tracks a user’s sleep and activity and then reports all the info in a handy-dandy phone app. It’s basically like a tiny Fitbit for your finger!

In new photos taken of Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle — who just announced she’s expecting the couple’s first baby! — during their 16-day royal tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand, the Prince can be seen wearing Oura’s Heritage black ring which retails at around $299 for a basic model.

It’s not really that surprising that Harry just debuted a new ring considering he’s always been a fan of jewelry and even bucked royal tradition by deciding to wear a wedding band after exchanging vows with Meghan, 37.

Harry is actually one of few men in the royal family who wears a wedding band. His older brother, Prince William, chose to forgo the piece of jewelry when he married Kate Middleton back in 2011 and their father, Prince Charles, and grandfather Prince Philip don’t wear wedding rings either.

So, why is that? Before you assume Harry loves Meghan more than William loves Kate or something absurd, it’s actually uncommon for British men to wear wedding rings. “It is not unusual at all for men from the upper sets in Britain to shun wearing a wedding band,” etiquette expert William Hanson recently told Brides. “This is not because of any intentions that they may wish to play away from home once married, but because it was traditionally not the done thing for gentleman to wear jewelry.” The more you know!
