So sad. Prince Charles‘ divorce from his late ex-wife, Princess Diana, didn’t just put him on the defensive in public, it also shook things up at home. The 70-year-old has two sons with Diana, Prince William and Prince Harry, but that doesn’t mean he had the strongest relationship with them.

A source revealed to Closer Weekly exclusively that Charles and Harry specifically had some difficulty. “Harry was always a mommy’s boy,” the insider revealed. “He never developed a strong bond with Charles.” Regretting the fact that they weren’t close, a source said Charles felt, “If he could turn back time, he would’ve done things differently.”

However, over the years, Charles and Harry, 34, have grown closer — specifically because of Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle. “The wedding was a real turning point. Charles showed so much love towards Harry and Meghan, and I think Harry will be eternally grateful to his papa for stepping in and giving Meghan’s hand in marriage. The bond between them is very close,” royal reporter Katie Nicholl shared via Vanity Fair.

Meghan has been putting an effort into their relationship since day one. “Meghan’s first priority was winning over her future father-in-law,” a royal source once revealed. “At first Harry couldn’t believe she was going to so much effort, but the more time they spent with Charles, the more Harry realized he must bury the hatchet. Harry was very touched by how welcoming Charles was to Meghan who, though confident, must have found adapting to royal life hugely intimidating. Charles played a huge part in making her feel at home.”

And now that Meg and Harry are expecting baby No. 1 this spring, they want Charles to be around more for their future son or daughter. In the recent documentary, Prince, Son & Heir: Charles at 70, Harry agreed with his brother that their dad “needs to slow down” and spend more time for his grandchildren.

“This is a man who has dinner ridiculously late at night, and then goes to his desk later that night and will fall asleep on his notes to the point where he’ll wake up with a piece of paper stuck to his face,” Harry revealed. “The man never stops. When we were kids, there were bags and bags and bags of work that the office just sent to him. We could barely even get to his desk to say goodnight to him.” Here’s hoping Charles and Harry’s relationship builds up even more with the arrival of his fourth grandchild!
