In Her Footsteps! Prince Harry Continues Mother Princess Diana’s Charity Work in Angola, Africa
Like mother, like son. Prince Harry continued the charity efforts of Princess Diana and had the opportunity to literally walk in her footsteps while working with The Halo Trust in Angola, Africa on September 27. Nearly 20 years ago, the late royal worked with the organization to help eliminate and ban landmines. “Princess Diana’s visit helped change the course of history, and directly led to the Convention against Anti-Personal Landmines, also known as the Ottawa Treaty,” the Duke and Duchess’ Instagram page explained.
Photos from the outing showed the 35-year-old donning similar protective gear and walking the same path — which was once a minefield — as his mom did. “In 1997 Diana Princess of Wales visited Huambo to bring global attention to the crisis of landmines and the people whose lives were being destroyed,” the royals’ social media page explained. “Two decades later, the area has transformed from desolate and unhabitable to lively and vibrant, with colleges, schools and small businesses.” Diana would have been 36 in 1997, so it’s amazing that her youngest son is able to have such a meaningful experience that captures the spirit of his mother.
Diana’s work did not go unnoticed or unfulfilled — but there are still things to get done. “Angola now has a stated aim under the Treaty to be clear of known mines by 2025. Despite great progress, 60 million people worldwide still live in fear of landmines every day,” the post acknowledged. “The Duke is humbled to be visiting a place and a community that was so special to his mother and to recognize her tireless mission as an advocate for all those she felt needed her voice the most, even if the issue was not universally popular.”
Harry has spoken a lot about his love of Africa and a big part of that is from his mom and the visits they took during his childhood. He and his wife, Duchess Meghan, and son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, are continuing the good work. The family of three is in the middle of their whirlwind 10-day tour across four countries. “Their Royal Highnesses will embark on this official tour focusing on community, grassroots leadership, women’s and girls’ rights, mental health, HIV/AIDS and the environment. This program has been many months in the making, and The Duke and Duchess are eager to focus their energies on the great work being done in Southern Africa,” their joint Instagram page divulged about the purpose of the tour.
