Love at first sight wasn’t exactly the case for the newly-engaged Dancing with the Stars pros Peta Murgatroyd and Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

“I thought he was arrogant,” Peta, 29, told People of meeting her future fiancé back in 2009 on the stage of Broadway’s Burn the Floor.

“Okay, that’s a defense mechanism. I think she was in love with me at first sight and just doesn’t want to admit it,” Maksim, 35, replied to his bride-to-be during their joint sit-down. “No, I walked in the way I walk in and… it’s just a lot of presence.”

However, Peta’s opinion on the dance champion shifted soon after their first encounter. “I learned to like him because I found out he wasn’t that arrogant,” she admitted. “He was really generous to the entire cast, and our friendship grew and grew.”

The couple first became an item in 2012 and dated for 10 months before calling it quits. They rekindled their romance earlier this year and Maksim proposed to Peta in early December onstage during a performance of their new show, Sway: A Dance Trilogy, in Miami, Fla.

Maksim was engaged to DWTS pro Karina Smirnoff from 2008 until 2009 and was also previously involved in a serious relationship with model Kate Upton. Peta dated former DWTS castmember Damian Whitewood from 2007 until 2012.
