Paula Deen may have lost some fans since her racism scandal last June, but she never lost the support of her family.

In an exclusive interview with Closer, her son, celebrity chef Jamie Deen, explains how the family is stronger than ever.

“It was a tough summer, but it’s made us stronger as a family … We are good members of the community and our attitude is to learn from our mistakes and go forward,” Jamie says.

Despite a difficult year, Jamie insists Paula is healthy and happy and excited to continue making a difference in people’s lives.

“She’s always been true to herself and she can really brighten up someone’s week just by spending time with them,” he reveals. “She’s authentic.”

But with the start of a new year, the Deen family are ready for a comeback.

“We look forward to getting back to work and persevering,” Jamie tells Closer. “We are going to have a big year in 2014!”’
