Patricia Clarkson may have a few new Hollywood awards under her belt, but the Sharp Objects star doesn’t have a diamond ring on her finger. And guess what? She’s quite alright with that! But the never-married actress, 59, did just surprisingly reveal to the public that she’d once been engaged.

Following her Critics’ Choice Award win earlier this week, Patricia chatted with reporters in the event’s press room and one of them asked, “Aside from weddings and births, what is one of the best days of your life?” The actress then replied, “I’ve never done either. Just winning. I’ve never wed, and I’ve never had a child so, hey!” before adding under her breath, “I was engaged once, but whatever.”

Though we don’t know why the engagement was called off — or who she was even once engaged to — the House of Cards star previously talked about her decision to stay single in an interview with Salon in August 2014.

“I can be controlling, but I’m much more impulsive,” Patricia explained while discussing her role as Celia Green in Last Weekend. “That’s why I never married or had kids. I’d jump in the water in my clothes [as Celia does], but not out of an airplane. I’m just fine flying in one.”

Just a year before that, The Untouchables actress told The Guardian in June 2013 that the reason she never married wasn’t intentional. “Don’t get me wrong, I hate being single. I’ve had beautiful, extraordinary men in my life and I wouldn’t change any of that,” she said. “But I’ve never wanted to marry, I’ve never wanted children, I was born without that gene.”

Today, Patricia is perfectly content with having her beloved dog as her right-hand man. In fact, she recently told Closer Weekly that her pet was the only one around when she learned she was nominated for a Golden Globe earlier this year! “Where was I? I was home in bed with my dog,” she revealed. So cute!

Patricia ended up winning the Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe for Sharp Objects and also took home the Best Supporting Actress Critics’ Choice Award a few days later for the same role. We’re sure she celebrated with her pup when she got home!
