It's been more than one year since Oprah Winfrey embarked on her weight loss journey with Weight Watchers. The 62-year-old, who is also an investor in the company, used her own experience to praise the diet program for helping her lose an impressive amount of weight in a new ad.
“Since I started Weight Watchers, I’ve lost over 40 pounds,” Oprah announced in the commercial. “I can honestly tell you I struggle no more. I’ve eaten everything I love — tacos, pasta. I’ve never felt deprived.”
Oprah made herself relatable to many women after she professed her undying love for bread — and made $12 million with one tweet — in another Weight Watchers ad last winter. Almost one year later, the O Magazine owner is 14 pounds lighter and she champions the idea that it is possible to lose weight while eating the types of food that would normally be restricted on a low-carb, low-fat diet plan while on Weight Watchers. She urged anyone who is unhappy with their weight to take the first step and join the program.
“I would say to anybody who’s thinking about joining Weight Watchers, ‘take the leap,’” she said. “And get about the business of enjoying a fantastic and full life.”
But Oprah’s weight loss journey hasn’t always been an easy one. She’s openly struggled with her weight for decades and her weight has been known to fluctuate. In an excerpt from her upcoming cookbook Food, Health and Happiness, Oprah recalled a time in 1985 that she was shamed for putting on weight by none other than the late Joan Rivers during an appearance on The Tonight Show.
“The audience laughed nervously as she wagged her flawlessly manicured finger at me, pointed out that I was still 'a single girl,' and challenged me to come back 15 pounds lighter next time she hosted,” Oprah recalled. “And the whole time I just sat there smiling breezily, wanting nothing more than to crawl under my chair.”
