It's over between Nia Vardalos and her husband, Ian Gomez, after nearly 25 years of marriage. The My Big Fat Greek Wedding star, 55, filed for divorce from her estranged spouse on Tuesday, July 3 and Ian, 52, filed his response to her filing in LA on Thursday, July 5.
According to People, Nia and Ian have listed "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their split. The couple previously tied the knot in September 1995 and are parents to an 11-year-old adopted daughter, Ilaria Gomez, whom they welcomed into their family in 2008.
"We’ve been respectfully separated for a lengthy period of time. Our relationship became a friendship so the decision to end the marriage is completely mutual and amicable," the duo said in a statement to People. "It is our hope that decency will prevail on the reporting of this story which will soon be yesterday’s news. Thank you for respecting our privacy."

Nia and Ian's romance was, of course, the inspiration behind the actress' hit 2002 film My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which starred Sex and the City actor John Corbett as Ian. Nia and John released a sequel to the movie, titled My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, in 2016.
In a previous exclusive interview with Closer Weekly, Nia opened up about filming My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 and working with her on-screen husband for a second time. "What made me say no [to s sequel] for so long is that I didn’t have an idea that I felt strongly enough about to write. Then my daughter, Illaria, started kindergarten and on the first day of kindergarten, I realized I had morphed into my own parents and that’s when I got the idea for the sequel, that day," Nia shared.

"I started writing that day probably and only because I was almost escorted off the premises of the school! I went to my little writing cave and channeled all my emotions and feelings of never wanting my daughter to go into the script," she continued.
As for her relationship with co-star John, Nia revealed the two are extremely close off set. "John is one of my closest friends in the world he is really the guy that you see on screen. He was raised by a single mom so he loves strong women, he is funny, he’s a prankster, I just love him. He’s a great, great guy," Nia shared.
