Netflix Offers First Look at ‘Little House on the Prairie’ Series Remake and Shares Surprising Update

Netflix has shared a first look at the upcoming Little House on the Prairie adaptation, along with some surprising news about the show.

On Tuesday, March 3, the streaming service offered its first image from the series in a blog post that announced the show has already been renewed for season 2 — despite not premiering its first episode until July 9.

The image seemingly shows the Ingles family patriarch leading a horse wagon while his three daughters trail behind him on the titular prairie.

“I’m incredibly grateful to our wonderful cast and crew, who put their hearts and hard work into making our first season come alive,” showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine said in a statement to Tudum. “We can’t wait to share this new adaptation of the Little House books with the world, and we’re thrilled that Netflix is giving us the opportunity to continue the story.”

Little House on the Prairie is based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s long-enduring 100-year-old book series about a family living their lives in the American West in the 1800s. Netflix’s adaptation is not the first time the books have been made into a series: The original show ran on NBC from 1974 to 1983 and included a handful of TV movies, including the pilot.

Netflix’s adaptation stars Alice Halsey as the lead character, Laura Ingalls, alongside Skywalker Hughes as Laura’s older sister, Mary; Luke Bracey as Laura’s father, Charles Ingalls; and Crosby Fitzgerald as Laura’s mother, Caroline Ingalls.

Netflix stated that the decision to renew the show for a second season before the first has even premiered is part of a larger effort to satisfy what it calls a “surging demand for feel-good, heartland-rooted comfort programming” on the platform.
