Morgan Freeman‘s goddaughter E’Dena Hines (who was often referred to as his step-granddaughter), 33, was found dead in NYC’s Washington Heights neighborhood on Sunday, Aug. 16.

According to police, she was stabbed multiple times in the upper body, and was then taken to Harlem Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Lamar Davenport, 30, Hines’ boyfriend, has allegedly been charged with murder and taken to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation. According to an eye witness, Davenport seemed to be performing an exorcism.

Freeman thanked his fans and loved ones for their continued support during this difficult time.

“The world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer,” he said in a statement. “Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person. Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace. “
