Meryl Streep Honored With Cecil B. DeMille Award at 2017 Golden Globes

Congratulations are in order for Meryl Streep!

The iconic actress took home the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 8 — and we couldn’t be happier for her on receiving this amazing honor!

How To Get Away With Murder star Viola Davis presented the accolade to Meryl, who was then honored with a touching video of all her best and most iconic movie roles combined.

The actress went on to give a touching acceptance speech, where she thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. “I love you all but you’ll to forgive me I lost my voice,” she began. “I have lost my mind sometime earlier this year so I have to read.”

Meryl went on to explain that we’re all apart of Hollywood, foreigners, and the press, literally. She then gave the childhood backgrounds on stars like Viola, Ryan Gosling, Sarah Jessica Parker, Dev Patel, and more. “So Hollywood is crawling with outsiders,” she said. “And if we kick them all out, we’ll have nothing to watch except football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”

Meryl continued with a brush on politics, and asked for the audience’s support in protecting journalists. She then told a story about herself and fellow actor Tommy Lee Jones.

“Once when I as standing around on the set one day whining about something, Tommy Lee Jones said to me, ‘Isn’t it such a privilege Meryl just to be an actor?’ Yeah it is, and we have to remind each other of the privilege and responsibility of the actor empathy. We should all be proud of the work Hollywood honors here tonight.”

She finished with a touching quote she was once told from the late Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher. “As my friend the dear departed Princess Leia said to me once, take your broken heart and make it into art. Thank you,” Meryl said in tears.

This prestigious award goes to an individual who has made a bold impact on the world of entertainment. Previous winners include Walt Disney, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Kirk Douglas, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Lucille Ball, Clint Eastwood, Doris Day, Audrey Hepburn, Robert Redford, Shirley MacClaine, Harrison Ford, Robin Williams, and George Clooney, among others.

Throughout The Devil Wears Prada actress’ career, she has earned eight Golden Globe awards and has received 29 nominations. You go, Meryl!
