Meghan Markle Has Caused a Surge in Internet Searches for This Classic Wardrobe Staple

With less than three months to go until Meghan Markle marries Prince Harry at St. George's Chapel, it appears that the so-called "Meghan effect" is already in full swing, with the future Duchess' style already inspiring our online shopping habits. While she’s only accompanied her fiancé on a handful of official events to date, Meghan has already fine-tuned her "on duty" wardrobe.

She's often photographed pairing a smart statement coat (case in point: the tartan Burberry style worn for her recent trip to Scotland) with a low-key sweater (much like the $55 Marks & Spencer roll neck knit that sold out in a matter of moments), a structured handbag (she favors Scottish accessories label Strathberry), and some wide-leg pants.

According to fashion search platform Lyst, it’s the latter item that’s experiencing a surge in popularity thanks to Meghan, with searches for the term "wide leg black trousers" rising by 40 percent in the 24 hours following her appearance in Scotland, when she wore a pair by Veronica Beard. On a trip to Brixton, England back in January, Meghan chose a similar wide leg pair by British label Burberry.

After she wore an Alexander McQueen tux for a recent awards ceremony, searches for "black cigarette trousers" also rose by 30 percent, while searches for black pants have increased by 40 percent since the beginning of the year. Coincidence? Since the announcement of her engagement, Meghan has alternately opted for big name brands (such as Burberry, Victoria Beckham, and even a Ralph & Russo couture gown for her engagement photos, and lesser-known labels such as Canadian outerwear specialists Sentaler (also favored by Canadian First Lady Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau, the brand recently hosted appointments at London Fashion Week), Line the Label, and Strathberry.

Speculation continues, meanwhile, as to which designer Meghan will choose for her wedding dress, with potential options reportedly including Roland Mouret, Erdem, McQueen, or even royal couturier Stewart Parvin, who dressed Zara Phillips for her wedding to Mike Tindall.
