Remember when Duchess Meghan used to only be known as the woman who played Rachel Zane on Suits? Well, during that time, she was dating Queen Elizabeth‘s grandson Prince Harry, and in order for them to keep their relationship status under wraps, Meghan, 38, had to go to great lengths to keep her character’s engagement ring hidden from the paparazzi when she filmed scenes in public.
According to Wendell Pierce, who played Rachel’s dad Robert Zane on the hit legal drama, Meghan had members of the British security service with her on set and she had to be very cautious when she wore Rachel’s engagement ring too.
“One day on the set there was the MI-5 [British security service] guy,” he recently recalled on KTLA 5. “I was like, ‘Oh, this must be serious. They sent someone over.’”
Wendell admitted that after he saw Meghan’s security guards on set, he started to be less skeptical of her relationship with Prince Harry. “I didn’t think it would happen. I was like, ‘Yeah, right,’” he joked.
However, that wasn’t the first time that Meghan had to be overly cautious about wearing a piece of jewelry on her hand. “One time we were in a scene before [Meghan and Harry] got engaged where she was engaged to Mike [Patrick J. Adams] on the show and they said, ‘Wait, don’t get out of the car,’” Wendell remembered. “They said, ‘Give us the ring because there’s paparazzi down the street so you can’t go out with the ring.’”
Even though Wendell was just Meghan’s on-screen dad, he still looked out for her like she was his real daughter. When Prince Harry finally paid a visit to Meghan’s job, Wendell was prepared to give the young prince a good talking to, but sadly he didn’t cross paths with Harry that day.
“He came to set one time, the prince. I didn’t get a chance to see him but I was ready to tell him, as her TV dad, ‘You break her heart, I’ll break your jaw,’” he laughed, before saying, “I really was gonna say that!”
