Believe it or not, bride-to-be Meghan Markle‘s fiancé, Prince Harry, has yet to meet her father. A retired Emmy-winning lighting director, Thomas Markle lives a quiet life in Mexico — and it has yet to be officially confirmed if Meghan’s dad will be in attendance at her upcoming wedding.

However, sources recently revealed to Life & Style that the former actress is adamant her father play a major role in the ceremony, set to take place on May 19. “Everyone has problems and faults, but Meghan doesn’t love him any less,” said a friend. “She’s told Harry that she wants her dad to walk her down the aisle. Harry is totally supportive and will go along with whatever Meghan wants, even if the palace might not like it.”

In the new book, Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., told author Andrew Morton that their dad is actually “terrified” to walk her down the aisle, though. “I know how proud he will be to take her arm and walk her down the aisle. But I also know how terrified he will be,” he said, according to Daily Mail. “If he doesn’t go he will regret it for the rest of his life. He is not just representing his family, he is representing America.”

But even though he’s terrified, her father is allegedly also “overjoyed” to stand by his daughter on her special day. “Thomas Sr. is overjoyed to be beside his little girl on the day she becomes a princess — even if he has to battle his demons to get there,” a source told The Sun. “He’s not exactly thrilled at facing the world’s glare. But nothing will stop him from having Meghan on his arm for the big day.”

Despite his private lifestyle, Thomas’ past has some drama. He filed for bankruptcy in 2016 and has had four tax liens in a 19-year period. It also doesn’t help that he has been married and divorced twice.

Shortly after their engagement, Meghan confirmed that Harry has yet to meet her dad face-to-face. “He’s talked to my dad a few times, hasn’t been able to meet him just yet,” she said. However, Meghan, 36, is confident Harry, 33, will love her dad just as much as she does. “I’m still your buckaroo,” Meghan wrote to her dad in an Instagram post this past Father’s Day. “To this day your hugs are still the very best in the whole wide world. Thanks for my work ethic, my love of Busby Berkeley films and club sandwiches, for teaching me the importance of handwritten thank you notes, and for giving me that signature Markle nose.” We can’t wait to see if Thomas ends up making his first trip to England to give Meghan away next month!
