It’s pretty clear that if your dad is Matthew McConaughey you’re going to have to sometimes deal with him bringing some of his film characters home, but the actor’s kids have no problem at all if that person he’s bringing home is the easy-going, beach-loving, Moondog.
The 49-year-old attended the Los Angeles premiere of his film The Beach Bum on Thursday, March 28. In it, he plays Moondog, a laid back guy who is all about living life by his own rules. In a way, it’s very Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski. The Oscar-winner was asked if he could ever see himself living like his character did.
“No. It’s not something that could fit me for as a full on lifestyle,” the Interstellar star explained. “I can understand going like this and going like, ‘Hey, I’m gonna go be this guy for two months and that’s going to be a vacation,’ which it was. But no, I’ve got too much, I like responsibility too much. I’m conscientious.”
He continued, “I’ve always wanted to be a father, I’ve got kids, I’m ambitious, I’ve got plans. I love to plan things, I love to go out and accomplish stuff too much, you know what I mean? So no, Moondog doesn’t think that way.” But while he wouldn’t be able to live this way at this point in his life, Matthew’s kids — Levi, 10, Vida, 9, and Livingston, 6, who he shares with wife Camila Alves, don’t mind having Moondog at home.
“[They] loved it! And plus, I mean Moondog … with my kids I’m coming home and I’ve been playing Moondog all day. I’m pretty fun to be around when I’m getting home,” he said. “Moondog and then Kenny Wells in Gold. I think my kids like those two characters the most ‘cause I was ‘Yes’ to everything. Milkshakes for breakfast, pizza for breakfast, yes, anytime it’s a good time, yes, you can stay up later.”
Matthew got a little bit deeper into the film’s character, saying, “Everything that he runs into, if he gets what he wants it’s pleasurable. Or if he doesn’t get what he wants and he runs into resistance, it’s all another note in his song.” He added, “So he’s just gliding along. And a dart can’t stick to Moondog. You can throw it but if he doesn’t acknowledge that you threw a dart, you can’t stick a dart in him.”
The Beach Bum is in theaters now, but unfortunately hasn’t done so well so far. If the trend continues it will be the actor’s second consecutive flop following Serenity, which was released this January.
