Last November, Matt Lauer was terminated from Today amid sexual misconduct claims. Fast forward five months, and the disgraced morning show host is preparing for the worst after losing his $25 million-a-year job.

“He’s panicking,” a friend tells In Touch before adding that he is desperate to find a new job. “His fortune is dwindling by the day. Matt is afraid he’ll end up broke and alone.” The 60-year-old journalist is already liquidating some of his assets, including his $7 million NYC apartment and he just dropped the asking price of his Sag Harbor property from $18 million to $12.75 million.

Plus, with his divorce from wife Annette Roquette looming, he is hoping to squeeze a few more payouts out of NBC. He’s hoping his legal team can argue that he should get a payout to the tune of $30 million. “Matt honestly feels he deserves it,” the source adds. But he likely won’t get it. “It’s an uphill battle,” explains the insider who notes that execs at the network are “determined to make sure Matt doesn’t see a dime more” due to the massive scandal he caused.

At the time, Matt released a statement apologizing and denying the allegations. “There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions,” he said. “To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry. As I am writing this I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC. Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed.”

Earlier this month, he finally moved out of the Hamptons home he shared with his wife, Annette, and their three kids, Jack, Romy, and Thijs. And unlike Annette’s decision to back out of her 2006 divorce filing, where she accused Matt of “cruel and inhumane” behavior, she is not changing her mind this time around and is gearing up for a multi-million dollar divorce.“Seeing her family and friends convinced her she was better off without him,” an insider previously told In Touch. “After all she’s been through, the nights of crying herself to sleep and trying to divorce him years ago, it was still one of the hardest things she’s ever done.”
